I am a mother of two beautiful children, and it was through bringing them into the world that I
became passionate about birth and helping women during this milestone in their life. I am now a
certified birth doula through DONA
and a breastfeeding educator through the State Department of
Health.

The first time I became pregnant my husband and I were ecstatic. There was a lot of talk of how our
lives were going to change once the baby was here, but there was little thought of the birthing
process in general. I knew what to expect from an anatomical perspective, and I of course, knew it
would be painful. What pregnant woman hasn't heard various accounts of labor that center around
how painful it is? Yes, we know that it is painful, but I believe a woman is much better prepared if
she is told how her body will be able to handle that pain, and how she was made to birth her child.

But, I was unprepared for what actually happens during labor and delivery. I found that I needed
more support than my husband and family were able to give. My husband and I quickly realized we
needed someone to care for us emotionally and physically. We needed suggestions on coping with
the
contractions and a constant assurance that it was all going well. Instead of my husband's
worried face, I needed a constant presence that completely believed I could do this.

When I became pregnant again I knew I wanted to have a very different experience. I sought as
much information as I could, and I hired a doula to help me and my husband. Looking back she was
worth every penny and much more. Along with my care provider, the doula proved to be a great
resource throughout my pregnancy. And she was essential during the birth of my daughter.

It is my desire for women to be fully informed about the choices they make regarding the birth of
their children. And, I believe that every parent should be completely supported and nurtured while
bringing forth new life into the world.
